A native of Kuching, Sarawak, Philip started playing the violin at the age of eight. He obtained a First Class Honours Degree Bachelor of Arts in Music Performance at Sunway University School of Arts and received the Jeffrey Cheah Scholastic Award for outstanding achievement throughout the course of study.
From 2010 – 2015, Philip was a member of the Malaysian Philharmonic Youth Orchestra (MPYO), having opportunities to collaborate side-by-side projects with the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra, and toured around peninsular Malaysia. In 2014, Philip joined the Asian Youth Orchestra, performing in venues such as Shanghai Oriental Arts Centre, Beijing National Centre for Performing Arts, Hong Kong Cultural Centre Concert Hall, Taipei National Concert Hall, Osaka Symphony Hall, Tokyo Metropolitan Theatre.
Philip has had the opportunity to work with in masterclasses with Maestro Benjamin Zander, Renaud Capucon, Gabor Takacs-Nagy, David Fruhwirth, to name a few. As a versatile musician, Philip collaborated with numerous orchestras and chamber engagements such as Shanghai Philharmonic Orchestra, National Symphony Orchestra, Kamerata Kuala Lumpur, RTM orchestra, YinQi, Kuala Lumpur City Opera, just to name a few.
Philip has been involved in coaching ensembles at the Sunway University Ensemble 2018, the Pastorale Strings Ensemble, and the Kuching Charity String Camp 2016 and 2017 and has achieved several awards at national and international competitions such as Honourable Mention at the International Ginastera Chiang Mai Music Competition 2018, 2nd Prize at the Sarawak Trinity Guildhall Competition 2010, and 1st Prize at the Borneo Post Malaysia Suzuki Association Violin Competition 2009.
