Ivon Smith, a New Zealand native, has been a lifelong music enthusiast, and these days calls Malaysia home.

His musical journey began at the age of five with a passion for drumming, inspired by African rhythms and Western artists like Ginger Baker and Stewart Copeland. At six, he discovered the world of Indian music and culture through the music of Pandit Ravi Shankar, a profound influence that continues to shape his musical tastes.

Self-taught on guitar since the age of thirteen, Ivon immersed himself in the folk scene of Britain and Scotland. He was drawn to the fusion music of the ’60s and ’70s, blending jazz, blues, rock, classical, and Indian styles. His musical heroes include John Mc Laughlin, Carlos Santana, Allan Holdsworth, and Paco de Lucia, among others.

Ivon’s diverse musical influences are evident in his own music, which he has performed globally since his debut album in 1993 with the band Underworld. After 16 years in Malaysia, he continues to lead and collaborate in various ensembles, showcasing his unique blend of musical styles.

As a seasoned musician, Ivon has developed his own approach to and materials for teaching guitar and music theory, emphasizing practical knowledge and hands-on skills. He believes in a fun and creative learning environment, encouraging improvisation and collaboration, with added emphasis on the value of the musician’s ear and their feelings.
