Cheryl is an accomplished musician and teacher with a deep passion for classical music and a commitment to sharing her knowledge and skills with others. Her musical career began early, and she showed interest for the viola at a young age. She went on to study music at the UCSI University in Kuala Lumpur, where she earned her Bachelor of Classical Music (Hons) degree in 2016 and her Master of Music in Viola Performance in 2018, as well as a Postgraduate Certificate in Teaching and Learning from Taylor’s University.
Throughout her career, Cheryl has performed with a wide range of ensembles and orchestras around the world, including the Malaysian Philharmonic Youth Orchestra, the American Festival Orchestra, and the DSCH Quartet, which she co-founded. As a member of the DSCH Quartet, Cheryl has received numerous recognitions for her ensemble playing, including a full scholarship for postgraduate studies in chamber music performance and the first prize from Académie–Festival des Arcs 2018 in France for performance with the DSCH Quartet performing Debussy’s String Quartet.
Cheryl is also a highly sought-after tutti violist, playing in various ensembles and orchestras in Kuala Lumpur, including the Klpac Orchestra, the ensemble KL String Project, Yin Chi Orchestra, Penang Philharmonic Orchestra, Kamerata Kuala Lumpur, Kuala Lumpur City Opera (KLCO), Virama Ensemble, and Bachfest Malaysia. Cheryl also performs in diverse musical settings, from classical concerts to pop music events. Cheryl has even performed on TV programs as a violist.
In addition to her performing career, Cheryl is a dedicated music teacher with a strong interest in early childhood education and string pedagogy. She has worked with young children for at least 10 years and teaches music theory, musicianship skills, individual instrumental lessons, chamber music ensemble, and string orchestras at St Joseph’s Institution. Her passion for teaching and sharing her love of music with others is evident in her commitment to helping her students develop their skills and reach their full potential.
