Peter-Jan Steen is a versatile Dutch percussionist with an impressive career spanning over 31 years.
His journey began at 7 when he first picked up a snare drum and joined his local marching band. Steen’s natural talent and passion for percussion were evident from the start, leading him to win the prestigious Princes Christina Concours district jury prize on marimba at 15 years.
Steen’s dedication to his craft led him to pursue formal training at the Conservatory (Hogeschool voor de Kunsten faculteit Muziek) in Utrecht. He further honed his skills with a Masters in Music at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam Percussion Department, where he was the sole first-year Masters student admitted from outside the Conservatory. Under the guidance of renowned percussionists like Gustavo Gimeno, Nick Woud, and Mark Braafhart, Steen developed a deep understanding of his instrument and the broader world of percussion.
Throughout his career, Steen has performed with numerous orchestras across Europe, including the Nederlands Philharmonisch Orkest, Radio Kamer Filharmonie, and Opera Vlaanderen.
He has also been involved in teaching and mentoring aspiring musicians, sharing this knowledge and experience with the next generation of percussionists.
In August 2019, Steen embarked on a new chapter in his career by relocating to Malaysia. Since then, he has immersed himself in the vibrant Asian music scene, collaborating with renowned orchestras like the Sichuan Symphony Orchestra and the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra.
His work with local percussionists Suyin Tan, Siu Yan Yap, and Chia Cheng Kok has further enriched his musical experiences and expanded his global reach.
Peter-Jan Steen’s exceptional talent, dedication, and versatility has made him a sought-after percussionist in Europe and Asia. His ability to seamlessly adapt to different musical styles and cultures is a testament to his passion for music and his commitment to excellence.
